Hyde Park
The Hyde Park is one of the biggest parks in central London covering an area of 142 hectares. It is inevitable that visitors to the park easily forget that they are in the centre of busy business and commercial city of London.
Hyde Park is also known as a very popular place of hosting large events, concerts and celebrations. Visitors are also attracted as it also provides the right ambiance for jogging, swimming, horse riding, picnicking and many leisure activities.
As recorded in history, the park was initially used for hunting in 1536 and later opened for the public in 1637. After its opening to the public, the park developed several areas. Separating Hyde Park from the nearby Kensington Garden is the Serpentine which is a large artificial lake popular for boating and swimming. Speaker’s Corner located in the northeast corner of the park is a place where anyone can communicate their views freely. Every Sunday people gather to this place to express their different views on politics, religions, and other social issues. Designed based on the Arch of Constantine in Rome, the Marble Arch located in the north-east corner was initially used as a gateway to the Buckingham Palace. Later on the arch was moved to its current place in Hyde Park in 1851.
The London underground tube stations which give easy access to the park are Hyde Park corner tube station, Queensway tube station, Lancaster tube station, Knightsbridge tube station, and Marble Arch tube station.
