Welcome to the 3 Star Elysee Hotel London
Marble Arch
Designed based on the triumphal arch of Constantine in Rome, Marble Arch was built in 1828 by John Nash. This white Carrara-marble monument is located just opposite the Speaker’s Corner in Hyde Park. Though currently placed opposite Hyde Park, It was initially built as the main entrance to the Buckingham Palace. Due to the expansion project of the palace, the arch was moved to its current location. Today it serves as a gateway between Bayswater and Marylebone. The three archways of Corinthian columns make the arch one of the most impressive sights in Central London.
Till 1950, the small rooms inside the arch was used as a police station for the royal constables and then for the metropolitan police. It is said that the arch was not completed as per the initial design of John Nash. Some sculptures were not placed in the arch due to financial problems faced by the designer. Sculptures that were to be placed on the east façade, above the old main entrance, opposite the Edith Cavell memorial ended up being placed on the façade of the National Gallery. Even though currently placed in busy Central London, convention says that only members of the royal family, and the Royal Horse Artillery and King's Troop are allowed to pass beneath the arch.
Located close to the Marble Arch are the largest Marks and Spencer showroom in UK, Tyburn Tree and Marble Arch underground station. As located in Central London, it is extremely convenient for travellers to pay a visit and witness the architectural marvel of Marble Arch. A hotel that is located with convenient access to the Marble Arch is Elysee Hotel which offers comfy accommodation at an affordable price.
